Piramal Pharma Solutions commissions a new microbiology lab and sterility testing suite at its $85M sterile injectable expansion site in Lexington, Kentuck

Piramal Pharma Solutions has brought a new microbiology laboratory into routine GMP operation at its sterile injectable manufacturing site in Lexington, Kentucky. The laboratory was released for routine GMP use on September 11, 2026, and shortly afterwards the facility's new sterility testing suite received conditional approval.
The development represents the first major component to come online as part of the company's USD 85 million expansion at the Lexington site.
Piramal Pharma Solutions, part of Piramal Pharma Ltd. (NSE: PPLPHARMA) (BSE: 543635), is a global Contract Development and Manufacturing Organization. The new laboratory and sterility testing suite are designed for GMP drug product applications. Commercial-scale fill/finish capabilities, the remaining portion of the expansion, are expected to be online in late 2027.
The dedicated sterility testing suite is a central feature of the new laboratory. It operates with a Grade C background environment, replacing the previously non-classified area used for this work. At its core is a fully integrated, Grade A sterility testing isolator that doubles the site's sterility testing capacity and permits multiple samples to be processed at the same time.
The isolator accommodates both open and closed filtration methods, giving the site flexibility to handle a broader range of product testing requirements. The suite also features built-in pass-throughs that transfer samples directly from the manufacturing floor into the laboratory, an arrangement that reduces contamination risk and protects product integrity.
The new microbiology laboratory more than triples the microbiology testing space previously available at the Lexington site. The company says the larger footprint supports improved laboratory workflow and provides additional capacity to accommodate future growth.
Three new biosafety cabinets within the expanded space allow concurrent testing, which reduces sample queue times. All incubators have been consolidated within the new laboratory, streamlining workflow and improving monitoring and accessibility across testing activities.
According to Piramal Pharma Solutions, the upgrades are expected to cut testing times by up to 50 percent. Faster testing is intended to accelerate batch releases, minimize bottlenecks, and ease transitions as client programs move from clinical to commercial stages.
The company adds that the new infrastructure strengthens the site's contamination control and sterility assurance capabilities, while the added testing capacity reduces supply risk and prepares the facility for commercial-scale demand.
"The new microbiology laboratory represents an important milestone in our Lexington expansion journey," said Nathan Richardson, VP and Site Head, Piramal Pharma Solutions Lexington.
"By enhancing sterility testing and microbiological quality capabilities, we are further strengthening our ability to support clients with high quality, reliable, and responsive services throughout the product life cycle. This investment reflects our continued commitment to operational excellence, patient safety, and the future growth of sterile injectable manufacturing in Lexington."
The company states that the new laboratory solidifies PPS' position in sterile injectables, enabling the Lexington site to serve small molecule, bioconjugate, and peptide modality clients worldwide.
